About the workshop:
This workshop introduces participants to the art of custom lettering, combining typographic theory with practical, hands-on drawing and vectoring. Across two sessions, students will explore the fundamentals of drawn letters, including letter anatomy, composition, hierarchy, and how to inject unique personality into custom letterforms. Through guided exercises, they will begin conceptualizing and sketching their own custom lettering layout from scratch, learning how to balance form, negative space, and stylistic consistency.
In the second session, participants will refine their hand-drawn sketches, transfer them to a digital environment, and learn essential vectoring techniques to bring their lettering to life. The workshop concludes with group feedback and final student presentations, encouraging collaborative reflection and critical discussion. By the end, students will have a clear, step-by-step workflow for creating original lettering pieces from concept to final digital artwork and applying these techniques to their own creative practice.
Session 1: Lettering Fundamentals & Concept Sketching
Focus: Anatomy of drawn letters vs. digital type, layout and hierarchy, project overview, exploring style and expression, and sketching initial lettering concepts through guided hand-drawing exercises.
Session 2: Refining & Vectorizing the Lettering Piece
Focus: Refining pencil sketches, digital vectorizing techniques in Adobe Illustrator, adjusting curves and composition, group feedback, and final student presentations.
We will start viewing shapes as states of a system and be inspired by the technology’s quirks and possibilities.
Outcome: By the end of this workshop, students will be able to conceptualize, design, and vectorize their own custom lettering pieces from scratch. They will gain a solid understanding of lettering fundamentals, including composition, bezier curve optimization, and stylistic harmony, while exploring how to translate hand-drawn concepts into polished digital artwork. Through a combination of theory and hands-on exercises, participants will learn a practical workflow for creating original lettering and refining it through collaborative feedback.

About Wete:
Joan Ramon Pastor Rovira, known as Wete, is a Barcelona-based graphic designer, art director, and type designer specializing in branding, lettering, and typeface design. He is the founder of Wete Studio and Ultra Types, where he develops visual identities and custom and retail typefaces for clients worldwide.
His work has been commissioned by leading international brands including Adobe, Adidas, Versace, and LVMH, among others. In 2017, he received the Certificate of Excellence from the Type Directors Club, recognizing outstanding achievement in typographic design.
Alongside his professional practice, Wete regularly lectures and leads workshops on typography, branding, and creative direction, sharing his expertise with designers and students internationally.
