From concept to Glyphs: design your own modular typeface and export a fully functional, installable font. Master the complete professional workflow and bring your unique digital alphabet to life!
This course guides students through the complete process of designing and producing a modular typeface, from initial concept to a fully functional digital font. Across six sessions, participants will explore typographic fundamentals such as classification, letter anatomy, alignments, modular systems, spacing, kerning, and character set development. They will also gain practical experience using professional type design software, including Glyphs, learning how to transfer vector drawings, build letterforms, refine consistency, and implement spacing directly within the font file.
Through a combination of theory, guided exercises, software demonstrations, and feedback sessions, students will develop their own modular alphabet and expand it into a usable typeface. The course also covers font generation, testing, troubleshooting, and final export. By the end, each participant will have created an installable digital font that can be used in their own design projects.
Session 1:
Typographic Fundamentals for Modular Type Systems
Typographic classification, letter anatomy, alignments, project overview, and an introduction to the Glyphs interface and essential tools.
Session 2:
Drawing in Glyphs for Modular Type Design
Understanding modular systems, developing the initial character set, and transferring vector drawings from Adobe Illustrator to Glyphs.
Session 3:
Typographic Spacing
Metrics, kerning, spacing principles, and implementing spacing within the font file in Glyphs.
Session 4:
Alphabet Design and Development
Expanding the alphabet from the modular system, refining consistency, and developing additional glyphs.
Session 5:
Exporting and Testing Your Typeface
Best practices for font generation, testing, troubleshooting, and preparing the final typeface.
Session 6:
Presentations
Final student presentations and group feedback.
Who will be your teacher?
Joan Ramon Pastor Rovira, known as Wete, is a Barcelona-based graphic designer, art director, and type designer specializing in branding, lettering, and typeface design. He is the founder of Wete Studio and Ultra Types, where he develops visual identities and custom and retail typefaces for clients worldwide.
His work has been commissioned by leading international brands including Adobe, Adidas, Versace and LVMH, among others. In 2017, he received the Certificate of Excellence from the Type Directors Club, recognizing outstanding achievement in typographic design.
Alongside his professional practice, Wete regularly lectures and leads workshops on typography, branding, and creative direction, sharing his expertise with designers and students internationally.

By the end of this course, students will be able to conceptualize, design, and develop their own modular typefaces from scratch. In addition to learning the principles of modular type design, they will gain practical experience using professional type design software to transform their concepts into fully functional digital fonts. Participants will learn the complete type design workflow, from initial sketches and vector construction to spacing, kerning, character set development, and font generation. By the end of the course, each student will have created an installable font file that can be used in their own design projects.
The course consists of 6 sessions, with the final session dedicated to student presentations.
