About the workshop:
In two days, you will learn how to transition your design thinking into motion using Cavalry. We will approach animation not through traditional keyframing, but through procedural design, learning how shapes, typography, and behaviors can interact to build automated, responsive systems.
We will focus on kinetic typography, grid systems, and generative structures, transcending static layouts, that will help you view motion as a natural extension of graphic design.set of forms. Through a series of guided exercises, participants will develop a consistent visual language by identifying what is essential, making intentional decisions around form, and refining illustrations through abstraction. The session will move from sketching by hand to digital refinement in Adobe Illustrator, culminating in a poster composition that brings individual illustrations together into a unified visual outcome.
Day 1: Understanding the Tool & Kinetic Typography
In this session, we will focus on understanding Cavalry’s core architecture and procedural logic. You will learn how to navigate the interface, connect parameters, prepare a color palette and work with Cavalry’s behaviours and utilities. By learning how to manipulate typography dynamically, you will experiment with kinetic type and export your first animated composition. We will start viewing motion as a system of rules and behaviors, drawing inspiration from the software’s unique workflow.
Day 2: Developing Systems & Abstract Forms
In this hands-on part, we will build on the first day’s foundation to explore abstract and generative design. You will learn how to use duplicators, image sampling , and utility nodes to create complex, self-animating patterns. Typographic loop? Generative poster? Animated grid? You will have full creative freedom to develop your own individual system of animated designs.
Outcome: By the end of this workshop, you’ll walk away with a functional understanding of Cavalry and your own self-initiated motion experiments. With the knowledge gained, you will be able to confidently open Cavalry and start designing and animating your own concepts from scratch.
Audience: This workshop is open to design students, design professionals, and curious creative minds of all experience levels. While no prior animation experience is required and anyone can take the course, those with experience in software with a similar UI—such as After Effects or Cinema 4D—may find the workflow easier to follow.
Required: Laptop and Cavalry.
